Volunteer at RAPS

The Regional Animal Protection Society always welcomes new volunteers. If you can dedicate just a few hours of your week, we need volunteers to feed the animals, clean animal pens, do laundry or dishes, and help out at our Thrift Store locations.

If you wish to volunteer at the RAPS Adoption Centre, volunteer shifts are from 9 a.m. to 12 noon daily. Volunteer shifts are usually two hours long, and we recommend that you commit to just one or two shifts a week. Please call us at 604-275-2036 or email us at volunteer@rapsbc.com to volunteer.

Volunteer requirements:

  • RAPS Requirements Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Volunteers under 19 years of age (B.C. age of Majority) must have a parent/guardian complete our Volunteer’s Agreement co-signed by the volunteer.
  • Volunteers under 19 years of age, but at least 16 years of age are required to be accompanied by an adult volunteer at every volunteer shift.
  • Volunteers under 16 years old, please email volunteer@rapsbc.com.
  • Volunteers must be at least 16 years or older to volunteer at the RAPS Animal Hospital
  • Volunteers must be 14 years or older to volunteer at the RAPS Thrift Stores
  • Volunteers must be willing to undergo a criminal record check.
  • Please bring picture ID with you to your volunteer orientation.
  • Volunteers must sign the Volunteer’s Agreement. Signing the agreement does not afford a right for Volunteer to be a volunteer at RAPS.
  • Volunteering at RAPS is a privilege, not a right. RAPS reserves the RIGHT TO REFUSE any applicants from volunteering at RAPS’ SOLE DISCRETION.
  • By agreeing to volunteer for RAPS you give permission to RAPS to use any photographs and video taken of you at the event in all media outlets including print, web and social to promote RAPS activities.

    RAPS has amazing and fun volunteer opportunities available at our City Animal Shelter, Cat Sanctuary, Thrift Store, RAPS Animal Hospital and at RAPS special events throughout the year.     Volunteers under 19 years of age, but at least 16 years of age are required to be accompanied by an adult volunteer at every volunteer shift.

  • THIS VOLUNTEER’S AGREEMENT (“Agreement”) is made and entered into this _________ day of the month of ____________________, 20______ (“Effective Date”) at Richmond, British Columbia between Regional Animal Protection Society (“RAPS”), and the undersigned person, who is an adult over the age of eighteen (19) years (“Volunteer”).
  • WHEREAS, Volunteer desires to assist RAPS as a volunteer; and
    WHEREAS, RAPS is grateful to the Volunteer, and is willing to permit Volunteer to assist as a volunteer subject to the provisions of this Agreement; and
    WHEREAS, the parties desire to set forth the terms and conditions under which Volunteer will be permitted to assist RAPS.
    NOW, THEREFORE, the parties agree as follows:
    Disclaimer of Employment. Volunteer acknowledges and agrees that she is not legally or morally obligated to work as a volunteer at RAPS, that such efforts are solely at Volunteers discretion, and that such effort is not undertaken by the Volunteer to help or protect Volunteer’s personal interests. Volunteer agrees to give his or her services to RAPS without any express or implied promise of compensation of any kind. As a result, while engaged in the performance of services as a volunteer (“the Services”) the Volunteer SHALL NOT BE AN EMPLOYEE OF RAPS for any purpose whatsoever. The Services are whatever duties that are assigned the Volunteer in the scope of volunteering for RAPS. Volunteer shall not be paid or compensated by RAPS for any of the Services performed by the Volunteer.No Worker’s Compensation Insurance Coverage. Volunteer understands, acknowledges and agrees that Volunteer WILL NOT BE COVERED by worker’s compensation insurance coverage while engaged in the performance of the Services.Waiver and Release of Claims. Volunteer hereby agrees that RAPS, and the City of Richmond, and jointly their officers, employees, board of directors, members, volunteers, supporters and agents (collectively, “Released Parties”) are NOT RESPONSIBLE for Volunteer’s safety in connection with the performance of the Services, and Volunteer RELEASES and DISCHARGES, in advance, the Released Parties from any and all liability in connection with Volunteer’s performance of the Services, even though such liability may arise out of negligence or carelessness on the part of the Released Parties or other volunteers engaged in the performance of the Services. Volunteer agrees to accept all responsibility for the risks, conditions and hazards which may occur during the performance of the Services related to the Services, whether they now be known or unknown. Further, being fully aware of the risks, conditions and hazards of which may be involved in providing the Services, Volunteer HEREBY WAIVES, RELEASES AND DISCHARGES, AND AGREES TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD RELEASED PARTIES HARMLESS FROM any and all claims for damages for death, personal injury or property damage which volunteer may have or which may hereafter accrue to Volunteer, Volunteer’s heirs or Volunteer’s estate as a result of Volunteer’s performance of the Services, whether such injury or damage was foreseeable or not, including, without limitation, any such claims regarding the design or condition of any equipment utilized by volunteer while performing the Services. This paragraph will survive the expiration of this Agreement.Indemnity RAPS. Without limitation and in addition to any rights of RAPS against the Volunteer arising by reason of any breach of this Agreement, the Volunteer will be liable to RAPS for all losses, costs (including legal costs on a solicitor and its own client basis), damages and expenses whatsoever which RAPS may suffer, sustain, pay or incur; and in addition will indemnify RAPS against all actions, proceedings, claims, demands, losses, costs (including legal costs on a solicitor and its own client basis), damages and expenses whatsoever which may be brought against or suffered by RAPS, its officers, employees, board of directors, members, volunteers, supporters and agents or which it may sustain, pay or incur, arising or resulting from a breach of this Agreement or any actions taken by the Volunteer. This paragraph will survive the expiration of this Agreement.Indemnity City of Richmond. Without limitation and in addition to any rights of The City of Richmond against the Volunteer arising by reason of any breach of this Agreement, the Volunteer will be liable to The City of Richmond for all losses, costs (including legal costs on a solicitor and its own client basis), damages and expenses whatsoever which The City of Richmond may suffer, sustain, pay or incur; and in addition will indemnify The City of Richmond against all actions, proceedings, claims, demands, losses, costs (including legal costs on a solicitor and its own client basis), damages and expenses whatsoever which may be brought against or suffered by The City of Richmond, its officers, employees, board of directors, members, volunteers, supporters and agents or which it may sustain, pay or incur, arising or resulting from a breach of this Agreement or any actions taken by the Volunteer. This paragraph will survive the expiration of this Agreement.Dangerous and Unpredictable Animals. The Volunteer acknowledges that the animals of the Richmond Animal Shelter or the RAPS Cat Sanctuary are not trained and that they can be unpredictable and dangerous. The Volunteer understands that RAPS cannot guarantee or be held responsible for the health, behavior or temperament of any animal handled by the Volunteer. Volunteer recognizes and is aware in the signing of this agreement that any animal under the care of RAPS, at the City Animal Shelter or the Cat Sanctuary, or elsewhere under the auspices of RAPS, may cause the Volunteer personal or property damage. Volunteer also acknowledges RAPS strongly recommends Volunteer, at their own volition, keep current with tetanus and rabies immunizations and to consult with their physician about this and any other concerns relating to working with animals. If Volunteer is or beleives they may be pregnant, they agree to seek immediate advice of a physician about working with all types of animals, especially cats.Entire Agreement. This agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the parties and supersedes any prior agreement or understanding.Applicability. This agreement shall apply to all volunteer work, the Serives, performed by the Volunteer from and after the date of this Agreement.Modification. This agreement may be modified or amended only by a duly authorized written instrument executed by the parties hereto. No oral modifications or amendments may be made.Binding Effect. This agreement shall be binding upon, and shall inure to the benefit of the parties, and their heirs, successors, personal representatives and assigns. Volunteer release and waive any right of action they presently have or may in the future acquire against RAPS or the City of Richmond, RAPS or the City of Richmond (collectively RAPS and the City of Richmond) their heirs, assigns, servants, agents or volunteers for any such loss or injury, even if such loss or
    injury is caused by the negligence or fault of RAPS or the City of Richmond, its servants, agents or its volunteers, whether acting in the scope of a Volunteer volunteering or not.Governing Law. This Agreement will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the laws of Canada applicable therein, and the parties attorn to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Province of British Columbia and no other courts.Headings. The section headings contained in this Agreement are for reference purposes only and shall not affect the meaning or interpretation of this Agreement.Severability. If any provision of this Agreement is determined to be invalid or unenforceable in whole or in part, it will be deemed not to affect or impair the validity of the remaining provisions hereof. For the purposes of this section, “provision” means any severable section, sentence, phrase or word which least alters the intent of the parties to this Agreement.Modifications and Waivers. No modification or waiver of any of the provisions of this Agreement will be effective unless in writing and signed by the party consenting to the modification or waiver. No failure or delay by any party in exercising any right, power or privilege under this Agreement will operate as a waiver thereof, nor will any single or partial exercise of any right, power, or privilege hereunder.Counterparts. This Agreement may be executed in counterparts that together will be deemed to constitute one valid and binding agreement, and delivery of the counterparts may be effected by means of facsimile or email transmission with the same effect as if original copies had been delivered.Independent Legal Advice. Volunteer declares and represents that they have carefully read and fully understand the terms and provisions of this Volunteer Agreement, that Volunteer has been given the opportunity to obtain independent legal advice about it by a lawyer of their own choosing, and that Volunteer knowingly and voluntarily accept the terms of this Volunteer Agreement.Expiry of Agreement. Except as otherwise noted herein, this Agreement, including the obligations of the Volunteer under this Agreement, will expire two years from the Volunteer resigning, in writing, their position as a volunteer of RAPS. The Volunteer confirms that paragraphs or clauses indicating ‘This paragraph will survive the expiration of this Agreement’ as contemplated hereby will survive the termination for any reason.
