Lady G Overcomes Challenges, Delivers Litter

A very difficult labour and delivery for a young mama abandoned in a basement.

Lady Ginger Spice of Clawingham – familiarly called Lady G – was found in the basement of a rental unit when the tenants moved out and left her behind.

She was brought to the RAPS Adoption Centre by the landlord who found her. A physical exam at RAPS Animal Hospital showed she was pregnant. She is very young mother, estimated by our team to be a year old at the most!

Lady G immediately went into home foster care with our most experienced pregnant cat and kitten volunteer, Kati.

On Sunday night, Lady G began what would be a difficult labour and delivery. It took quite a while to birth four kittens who appeared to be without their water sacs. Lady G continued to bleed following birth and was rushed to RAPS Animal Hospital. An exam showed two more kittens inside – they had strong heartbeats and mama was not in distress. Acupuncture was used to induce delivery of the remaining two. It again took a long time for baby five to be born and he required some breathing revival. The remaining kitten appeared to be in breach position and was sadly stillborn.

Lady G finally passed the placentas at the hospital and is on antibiotics as a precaution. She’s doing well, as are her five surviving kittens who are being lovingly cared for in Kati’s kitten nursery.

Mama and kittens will remain in foster care until they are around 8 weeks old, at which time they will prepare to become adoption ready. Lady G will be spayed and will also be available for adoption once she has healed.

This sort of challenging situation is why RAPS exists. We hate to think of what might have happened had Lady G not been discovered and brought to safety.

She and her new family have a bright future – thanks to RAPS supporters who make our work possible and volunteers, like the tireless, devoted Kati, allow us to deliver individualized care to even the most challenging cases.
