Meet the Interns (Part 2)
Every year, RAPS is fortunate to receive funding from the Government of Canada for internships to help us deliver projects and services.
This year, we have a crop of the most awesome young folks who are doing amazing things to help us help animals!
This week, meet the interns who are working at the RAPS Cat Sanctuary. (Last newsletter, we introduced you to the team over at the administration offices!)
KAYA
What and where are you studying?
I am currently studying Marine Biology at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Where did you grow up?
I have spent my whole childhood growing up in New Westminster.
Why did you want to work at RAPS this summer?
I have always had a deep admiration for animals, and it has long been a dream of mine to work closely with them. I aspire to gain hands-on experience in the field of animal care while also contributing to an incredible organization.
What are you doing at RAPS this summer?
This summer, I am working at RAPS Cat Sanctuary, helping to clean and to care for the many different cats the Sanctuary homes. My responsibilities include general cleaning of the pens and rooms, preforming miscellaneous tasks and, of course, showing all the cats (the ones who let me) lots of love!
Future plans?
After completing my undergraduate studies, I aspire to attend veterinary school with the goal of becoming a wildlife veterinarian. My main focus will be on marine animals, and I hope to travel to Australia to further my expertise and contribute to wildlife conservation there!
ANASTASIA
What and where are you studying?
I just graduated from Kitsilano Secondary School and I plan to study Zoology at the University of Guelph in Ontario.
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Vancouver and I have been in Vancouver my whole life.
Why did you want to work at RAPS?
I wanted to work for RAPS because I have such a great love for cats and I want to help them in any way that I can. Also, I really admire RAPS’ mission of being a no-kill sanctuary.
What are you doing at RAPS this summer?
This summer I am working as an animal care intern where I mostly spend time cleaning and taking care of the cats’ wellbeing, as well as learning and getting to know each and every cat at the Sanctuary.
Do you have a pet?
I have a 12-year-old cat named Zeus, who is part bobtail and part Nebelung.
Future plans?
In the future, I want to work with animals in some capacity but I’m not quite sure what that looks like yet.
