Best buds Popcorn and Casper find a home – together!

Trapped as semi-ferals six months ago, this pair is the last of five from that rescue to find their forever family. We are so happy!

We love a happy ending – and this week we’ve got a double dose of happiness!

Last October, our animal control team trapped five cats that were living on a property in East Richmond. They ranged in age from an estimated eight months to 21 months. They were semi-feral, fractious and very frightened when they arrived at the Shelter. They had clearly not had much, if any, human contact.

The five were named Casper, Popcorn, Cheerio, Espresso and Maple. All the cats are males, except for Popcorn. They were all unaltered and so required spays and neuters. As per protocol, the cats also received SNAP tests that check for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FeLV (feline leukemia) and were vaccinated and treated for fleas.

Casper was the most frightened cat of all of them, but started to tame up quickly with lots of TLC from the Shelter staff.

Maple was adopted on his own. Cheerio and Espresso were adopted together. That left Popcorn and Casper, who developed a strong bond and we hoped someone would adopt the two cats together.

Meanwhile, Popcorn remained quite shy, but started to accept pets and loving from the staff.

Popcorn had several meet-and-greets with potential adopters but her shyness and tendency to hide from strangers had her overlooked several times. As it happened, Casper was adopted, but was soon returned because his first adopter received bad health news about themselves and unfortunately could not care for him. On the plus side, the two buddies were reunited.

Casper

Casper and Popcorn made the big move with us out of the Number 5 Road Shelter into the new RAPS Adoption Centre at the end of January, and we waited for the right family to come along for the pair.

That day has happened! In a magnificent new beginning just in time for spring, Popcorn and Casper went home with their wonderful new human mom Henna, who absolutely adores them both.

This is the kind of story that reminds us of why we do what we do. All five of these cats would have faced a very uncertain future – and almost certainly far shorter lives than they deserve – had we not trapped them. Instead, each of them is in their glorious forever home!

We hope you take pride in this happy ending too, because everything we do is possible thanks to your support!
