STATEMENT FROM EYAL LICHTMANN, CEO, REGIONAL ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY and FEARN EDMONDS, PRESIDENT

NOVEMBER 27, 2020

The City of Richmond has chosen the BC SPCA to manage Shelter operations during the construction period as the City of Richmond Animal Shelter is redeveloped over the next one to two years.

RAPS is grateful and enthusiastic that an organization like BC SPCA, with a network of shelters throughout the province, has the capacity to accommodate animals requiring relocation during the two-year interim period. We look forward to collaborating with our friends at the BC SPCA to ensure the smoothest transition and seamless delivery of care to the animals.

The people of Richmond have overwhelming shown their support of RAPS, especially in this 25th anniversary year of our organization.Because of the support from mostly Richmond residents, in the last five years, RAPS has gone from assisting 1,200 animals to 15,000 animals annually.

Thanks to the public, RAPS has won the recognition of our community with four prestigious awards in 2020:

RAPS won Best Community Organization” and RAPS Animal Hospital was voted “Best Veterinarianby Richmond News readers in “Best of Richmond 2020.

RAPS won both Business Leadership of the Yearand “Association of the Yearin the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award.

We are honoured and humbled by the gratitude of the Richmond community with these awards. We don’t do it for awards, of course. We do it for the animals. (But it’s nice to be recognized.)

The RAPS team extends gratitude to the people and City of Richmond for entrusting us with the care and control of animals for the past 13 years in operating the City Animal Shelter. We have always been committed to the animals and people of Richmondwhile expanding our services across the province. While RAPS’ programs are B.C.-wide, most of our operations are located inRichmond – where we started and where we intend to stay and grow.

We would be delighted if you would join us in thanking City Council with an email at MayorandCouncillors@richmond.ca for having entrusted RAPS with the City Animal Shelter contract in serving the animals and people of Richmond these past 13 years.

Our commitment to the people and animals of Richmond will not waver as we advance into an exciting new era of saving and improving the lives of even more animals. Our mission is to help animals and their people and since opening the RAPS Animal Hospital we have provided more than $2 million worth of support for our community.

Our priorities include opening a new RAPS Dog Sanctuary, a standalone RAPS Animal Shelter that is unlimited in its geographic reach, growing our social enterprises through more thrift stores and “franchising” the RAPS Animal Hospital model. Our trajectory of growth continues.

We are excited to enter our second quarter-century by broadening our reach and saving and improving the lives of even more animals. Everything we do is possible because of the generosity of animal-loving people in the community. Thank you for your continued devotion to our mission and we look forward to continuing this lifesaving journey with your support.
