Sweet reunion! Runaway pup gets in a jam, but RAPS helps family reunite

RAPS Animal Shelter staff received a special visitor bearing gifts on Sunday when 11-year-old Isabelle Chen dropped by to thank RAPS staff for reuniting her with her best friend, Otis.

Otis, the family’s four-month-old puppy, escaped the house and was found running at large and was then dropped off at the RAPS City of Richmond Animal Shelter late at night. Otis thankfully came in otherwise unharmed from his misadventure and was reclaimed the next morning by the incredibly relieved family.

There’s more to the story. Like a lot of kids, Isabelle wanted a puppy. Her parents told her that if she saved up the money, she could get one. While making coconut and pandan jam with her dad, Chef Alex Chen, she came up with the idea of selling the jam – her favourite – to help raise money to get her pup.

The recipe was passed down from Isabelle’s grandmother. Pandan is a fragrant tropical leaf and a common ingredient in some Asian cuisines, particularly in Singapore and Malaysia. The Richmond News did a story about Isabelle’s entrepreneurial jam-making.

She made and sold enough jars and eventually got her puppy, a miniature Schnauzer, whom she named Otis.

Happily reunited and relieved, the family wanted to thank the RAPS team for helping. Isabelle gifted the staff with some jars of her “Chen’s Jam” and the staff can’t wait to try some of this sweet goodness!
